Today
Intersections of the world today have a lot of safety issues. When you cross the street you are being put directly in front of the oncoming car. If a car runs the read light it is very easy for a pedestrian to be hit.
Future
In the near future a way to keep pedestrians safe would be to raise the intersection that the cars cross. If you do this that would mean the pedestrians would walk underneath this "floating" walkway. The cars would drive up to the top and stop until the lights turned green and it was their turn to go.
I think this idea is great, but rather costly. I think digging slightly into the ground and lowering the platform by the same amount would help eliminate a little bit of the problem of drivers not being able to see each other.
